Neither the hand nor the exact date of my construction are known however the title of “Madonna di Leuca” and my geographic location make my function clear, as a place of rest and refreshment for the pilgrims who once travelled many kilometres on foot headed towards the sanctuary of Santa Maria di Leuca. It is certain that over the centuries, Mass was celebrated here, in honour of Saint Anthony of Padua, to whom I am co-entitled.
My history is covered in mystery. It is narrated that a pilgrim returning from the sanctuary of Madonna di Leuca decided to construct me ex voto, after having a miraculous vision right here in this place.
The legend also refers to the statue of Saint Anthony, that I still keep in a niche.
It is narrated that along the road that leads to Surano, a big stone mass is found called Stone of Saint Anthony, anciently used for lifting the statue during the procession in his honour. It seems that when the Church was deconsecrated and the statue carried in procession towards the town, where it would be permanently transferred, the sculpture sent a “sign” and passing near the mass of stone suddenly became heavy, forcing the devotees to retrace their steps, back in the direction of the church ,to which the statue resumed its original lightness.
The Napoleonic Laws issued in the edict of Saint Cloud in 1804 banned burials within urban areas, hence my use also as burial ground from the year 1840 to 1912, when the cemetery was constructed next to me.
With only one room, covered with vaulted edges, marked with niches arranged on the lateral walls.
The facade is plain: two smooth pilasters at the sides that end with two pinnacles and a centre ornament, that is smooth and with a metallic cross above it.
