I am the green lung of Songano, a tract of secular olives on the course(serre) that from Spongano slides towards Castiglione d’Otranto.
It is narrated that here precisely, refugees from Vaste or from Castro took shelter and then founded the city of Spongano. It seems that, at that time, a violent storm flooded the homes and countryside and that only the brilliant idea of using sponges contributed to resolving the problem.
The toponym of the town could have raised from here, that would derive from ancient “Spugnano” (from spognia-ae: sponge) and the town coat of arms that shows a cane driven through a sponge.
Amongst majestic olive trees and oaks, hidden are the characteristic pajare, exclusively dry stone walls, like the majestic pajare placed in the locality of “Laccurussu”, an elegant country house and farms, like the Casino Mattia dated back to 1737.
The “Itinerary of the mulberry” has recently been added to a course of routes to take on horseback, seen at an intercommunal and interregional level for the development of “sustainable tourism, thematic itineraries and horse trail for the promotion of naturalistic and cultural heritage”, putting in connection the natural protected area of “Costa Otranto – Santa Maria di Leuca” to the coastal region of Valona, the lagoon of Nartë and the lagoonal environment of Orikum in Albania, in this way valorising relevant sites for the presence of trans-Adriatic species, migratory passages, karstic cavities, hypogeum sites, lagoonal and dunal environments.
