I am one of the sites of European community importance of Salento and entire Puglia. I cover an area of about 54ha to 160m.s.l on the Serre of Salento, that in this area is called Serra di Cardigliano. I am situated very near Borgo Cardigliano, an old farm from the 14th century, belonging to the Balsamo family, and which during the fascist period was transformed into a manufactory for the production of tobacco.
The harsh terrain and calcareous nature support the engraftment of typical Mediterranean woodlands, trees and shrubs, among which we find thorny oak trees, wild olives, strawberry trees, rosemary, wild asparagus, rock rose shrubs, myrtle, butchers broom, mastic trees, madder and yellow sage. It’s the best habitat for many insect species including Arge butterfly, with white and black wings; reptiles like common lizards and colubro leopardino european rat snake) with a typical spine colour brown-reddish black bordered spots and wild animals like fox. Even buzzard that prefer areas characterized by an alternation of woods and grassy vegetation, live and nest here.
Created amidst my trees, is a naturalistic path with several resting areas with picnic facilities immersed in nature.
