In medieval Pugliese itinerary, much importance was given to the pilgrimage towards the sanctuary of Leuca. After passing the territory of Supersano, passerbys found themselves stopping at the highest point of the district, la Madonna della Serra di Ruffano, a panoramic terrace at 170metres above sea level. I look out from here, named after Virgin Mary commonly called Madonna del Latte (Madonna of milk), representing one of the important stages on the “way to Leuca” and receiving visitors inside with a game of lights and shadows.
Behind me, on higher ground, is a watch tower dated back to the 16th century, fitted with a trap door near the only entrance it has. The site was used as a control station overlooking the entire valley at the feet of the hill. As property of the City Council of Ruffano, in 2008 it was restored and destined as a visiting centre and naturalistic museum.
From here, you can clearly see the whole way of the pilgrims, a steep, small and unsurfaced road that passes through the ridge of the hill until it reaches the square in front of the cemetery of Ruffano.
