The obliteration of the original site of «S. Maria de la Grotta» (Saint Mary of the Cavern) took place on order from Bishop Giorgio Rosa (George Rose) of Castro, between 1521 and 1530, for reasons and circumstances not known. It was not until 1929 when the crypt of Santa Maria degli Angeli, was rediscovered revealing how badly its pictorial decorations were damaged due to the bad state of conservation caused mainly by water and humidity. Despite some interventions carried out over the next 25 years to save it, in 1955, Mr Cesare Brandi, the Head of the Restoration Centre Institute of Rome decided to finally remove all stone panels with wall paintings, saving it from complete deterioration that would eventually occur due to mould and advanced carbonate crusts.
The stone panels recovered from the intervention were restored in the laboratory of one of Romes renowned institutes and then exhibited at Mercati Traianei (Trajan Market) in 1958 and Turin in 1961. Even though the council of its original location in Poggiardo was reclaiming it. Mr Brandi, in more than one occasion excluded an eventual return of the frescoes to its original place, emphasizing the need for a new and suitable place to keep it.
